Memphis defeats BYU to capture Miami Beach Bowl in double OT

Justin Ford / USA TODAY Sports

Memphis left Marlins Park victorious after defeating BYU 55-48 in double overtime in the Miami Beach Bowl on Monday.

The game proved to be a fierce offensive battle, with both teams gaining a total of 905 yards. The Tigers were the first to put points on the board, with quarterback Paxton Lynch connecting early in the first quarter with wide receiver Keiwone Malone - named the top receiver of the game - for a 33-yard pass and a score. The touchdown set in motion a back-and-forth matchup.

The Cougars seemed on the verge of victory when linebacker Zac Stout returned an interception 19 yards for a touchdown to give BYU a 45-38 lead in the fourth. However, Lynch, the top passer and rusher in the game, again found Malone on a 5-yard pass for a score to send the match into overtime.

The Tigers clinched the victory when Lynch connected with wide receiver Roderick Proctor for an 11-yard score in the second overtime.

Memphis has now won 10 games in a season for the second time. Their last 10-win season was in 1938, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in his second term as U.S. President, according to ESPN Stats & Info

The joy over the Memphis victory quickly turned vicious when a brawl broke out between Tigers and Cougars players, tainting an otherwise thrilling bowl game.
