The Carolina Hurricanes have traded defenseman Jay Harrison to the Winnipeg Jets for a sixth-round pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, both clubs announced Thursday.

Harrison had four points in 20 games with the Hurricanes, averaging 16:30 of ice time.

The 10-year veteran played under Jets head coach Paul Maurice with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2006-07.

"We thank Jay for his time with the Hurricanes,” Carolina general manager Ron Francis said in a statement. “He represented our organization with class and we wish him and his family nothing but the best."

The Jets were in need of reinforcement on the blue line after finding out defenseman Mark Stuart is out until February with a lower-body injury.

"(Maurice) felt (Harrison) would fit right into our dressing room and environment," Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said. "He talked about his fitness level."
