Heat applying for exception after likely losing McRoberts for the season

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Heat can't catch a break on the injury front, so they're turning to the NBA in search of some assistance.

With Josh McRoberts likely done for the season after tearing his right meniscus, the Heat will apply for a disabled player exception from the league. The exception would give them $2.65 million with which to acquire a player on a one-year deal, either by signing or by trade, once they've cleared a roster spot.

Applying for the exception is a strong signal that Monday's announcement that McRoberts may be done for the year is far more certain than the language used. For the Heat to get the exception, McRoberts will have to be ruled out for the season by an independent NBA physician.

The Heat may not apply for the exception right away, instead waiting until after McRoberts has surgery early next week. That's because there's a 90-day wait before an appeal can be filed if they're denied their request, so gathering as much information as possible before making a move is prudent.

Should the exception be granted, the Heat would have until March 10 to use it.
