Stuttgart, manager Armin Veh agree to part ways

BERLIN - VfB Stuttgart on Monday sacked coach Armin Veh after just six months in charge with his team bottom of the Bundesliga having won just nine points in 12 league games.

The 53-year-old, who steered Stuttgart to the 2007 German league title during his first stint at the club, admitted he was emotional when he heard of his dismissal.

"This step is very hard for me to take because the club and the team are close to my heart," said Veh.

"But at the end of the day I have to accept it as I am convinced it is the right thing to do."

Stuttgart's 1-0 defeat at home to Augsburg on Sunday was the last straw for the club's board.

"We believe that a change of coach is necessary to get back on track," said club president Bernd Wahler.

This is the second time in six years Veh has been dismissed at Stuttgart, who also fired him in November 2008.

He was also sacked by Wolfsburg in 2010 and Hamburg in 2011 after unsuccessful stints at the German league clubs.

He steered Eintracht Frankfurt to promotion back to the Bundesliga in 2012, but decided not to renew his contract earlier this year before he took over at Stuttgart in May.
