Seahawks' Carroll has considered Richard Sherman at wide receiver

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, like many defensive backs before him, has lobbied endlessly to play wide receiver, and head coach Pete Carroll hasn't shut him down.

"He's been very clear in that intent for a long time around here," Carroll told KIRO Radio 97.3 FM on Friday. "It's always been a conversation that we've had, and if I need him I'm going to him and he knows that."

Sherman was promoting himself as a receiving option earlier in the week - all tongue-in-cheek, of course.

"I'd be pretty good," Sherman told reporters. "You can hardly touch (receivers). If you could hardly touch me I'd have a nice day."

But when Carroll was asked if there had been serious discussions about the move, he confirmed there had.

"Sure," Carroll said. "He was a good receiver growing up and he has tremendous catching range and all that, as we've witnessed in his defensive play, and he would love to do it. So he's ready. If we get in an emergency situation, he knows I'm coming to him."

Sherman, a receiver in college, caught 73 passes for 1,232 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman and sophomore at Stanford.
