Bill Daly admits Ray Rice situation played part in decision to suspend Slava Voynov

The National Hockey League surveyed the sports landscape and acted accordingly when it came to Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov.

Speaking at the PrimeTime Sports Management Conference in Toronto on Monday, deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the National Football League's handling of the Ray Rice situation played a part in the NHL's decision to levy an indefinite suspension on Slava Voynov following an arrest on Oct. 20.

He added that the domestic violence case involving the former Baltimore Ravens running back caused the NHL to self-evaluate in regards to its handling of similar situations involving their players.

In terms of Voynov's indefinite suspension, Daly said the league is taking things day by day, and is waiting to see how the legal process unfolds.

Voynov and his agent are believed to be working on appeal to have his suspension lifted, while the NHL and the Players' Association are discussing the possibility of a salary cap exception for the Kings.
