Capitals' Ovechkin scores twice in 1st period vs. Blue Jackets to snap 3-game drought

Geoff Burke / USA TODAY Sports

Alex Ovechkin wasn't going to keep his name off the score sheet for long.

Mired in a three-game goal drought - not insignificant for a player of his ilk - the Washington Capitals superstar hit the back of the net twice in the first period of Tuesday's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The first was vintage Ovi, rifling a one-timer from the left circle for the power-play marker. He got a little help from his friends on the second, finding the puck on his stick after three straight drop passes, the last of which came from Jay Beagle, of all players.

The goals were Ovechkin's seventh and eighth of the season, and the Capitals held on for a 4-2 win over their divisional foes from Columbus.
