Real Madrid confirms Gustavo Ayon signing

Jeff Hanisch / USA Today Sports

The speculation about the status of free agent center Gustavo Ayon can finally come to a rest.

After a confusing couple of weeks - reports had Ayon as having signed with Real Madrid in Spain, then those were refuted with interest from the San Antonio Spurs reported, and then firmer Madrid rumors re-established - the Spanish ACB club announced the signing on Tuesday.

Ayon's deal is rumored to be a three-year deal worth $6.7 million, more than he would have received stateside. He may not be out of the NBA for long, though, as he's said to have an escape clause each offseason, and the third year of the deal is a team option.

It wouldn't be at all surprising to see the 29-year-old return to the NBA, as the quality of his play suggests he belongs. In two seasons across four teams, he's struggled through injuries and been unable to carve out a consistent role, though he's averaged 10.2 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists per-36 minutes while shooting 53.6 percent.
