Yankees' Ellsbury suffers hamstring strain; 'distinct possibility' he's done for season

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees' slim playoff hopes were dealt a major blow Friday night.

Jacoby Ellsbury was diagnosed with a right hamstring strain after running out a fielder's choice during his fourth inning at-bat against the Toronto Blue Jays, the team announced. He is scheduled to undergo an MRI.

The Yankees defeated the Blue Jays, 5-3, for their third straight win to move within 4 1/2 games back of the American League's second wild-card spot with nine games left to play.

After the game, however, manager Joe Girardi conceded there's a "distinct possibility" Ellsbury is done for the season.
