Report: Gustavo Ayon has not signed overseas, weighing offer from Spurs

Barely a week ago, it seemed as if Gustavo Ayon had signed with Real Madrid in Spain. It now seems as if the excitement of the FIBA World Cup being in town caused a jumping of the gun.

Apparently, the Mexican center is weighing said offer from Real Madrid but also has standing offers from Shangdong of the Chinese league and the defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs. This news comes from a report from RealGM and backs up an earlier note from Marc Stein of ESPN that indicated Ayon still wanted to stay in the NBA, but overseas money was causing him pause.

Ayon came to the NBA in 2011 after going undrafted in 2007 and spending several years in Mexico, Venezuela and Spain. In three NBA seasons split between New Orleans, Orlando, Milwaukee and Atlanta, the 6-foot-10 Ayon has averaged 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds in 16.7 minutes while shooting 53.6 percent from the floor.

While he's had trouble staying on the floor at times – he's played just 135 games over his three seasons – Ayon is a solid rebounder and a crafty scorer. If the Spurs are serious about being open to moving restricted free agent Aron Baynes, Ayon would slide in nicely as the backup to Tiago Splitter at the pivot.
