Report: Gustavo Ayon signs with Real Madrid

John E. Sokolowski / USA TODAY Sports

Gustavo Ayon's 25-point, eight-rebound performance in a losing effort against the United States on Saturday must not have improved the offers he was receiving from NBA teams, because the Mexican big man has reportedly decided to sign with Spanish team Real Madrid, according to solobasket.com.

ESPN's Marc Stein reported over the weekend that Ayon prefered to remain in the NBA but was getting richer offers from Europe.

The 29-year-old struggled through an injury-plagued year with the Hawks last season that saw him average 4.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.0 steals in 26 games. In three NBA seasons with the Hawks, Bucks, Magic and Pelicans, Ayon averaged 4.7 points and 4.4 rebounds in 16 minutes per game.

Ayon is no stranger to Spanish basketball, having played for Baloncesto Fuenlabrada, CB Illescas and Tenerife CB before moving on to the Association. He has also played in Mexico and Venezuela.
