Blue Jays' Brett Lawrie out for the season with strained oblique

Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie's season is over after the team transferred him to the 60-day disabled list Tuesday.

Lawrie played just three innings in his return from a fractured finger before suffering a left oblique strain Aug. 5 against the Baltimore Orioles.

Tuesday's transaction was made to accommodate several call-ups, including top prospects Daniel Norris and Dalton Pompey. The Blue Jays officially confirmed the expected promotions via Twitter. It was also announced that right-hander Neil Wagner was released by the team.

Lawrie, 24, has been plagued by injuries throughout his young career, having never appeared in more than 125 games at the big-league level. Prior to landing on the DL for six weeks with a fractured right index finger, the 2008 first-round pick looked poised to put together a career year.

He eclipsed his previous high for home runs in just 70 games, clubbing 12 homers across 282 plate appearances. His .247/.301/.421 hitting line was skewed by an awful first few weeks at the plate, as his .291/.342/.465 slash since April 26 helped create 23 runs more than league average, according to FanGraphs' wRC+ metric.

Given Lawrie's potential at the dish and versatility in the field - where he manned both second and third base this season - his injury left a huge hole on a roster already decimated by various ailments.

The Blue Jays went 39-31 with Lawrie in the lineup, and just 30-36 in his absence.
