It appears Thomas Vermaelen's days are inevitably coming to an end with Arsenal, as the club has reportedly agreed to a transfer fee that will see the Belgian defender make the move to Spanish giants Barcelona.

The Gunners have agreed to a £15-million transfer fee with the Catalan club and Vermaelen will have to come to an agreement on personal terms and pass a medical to complete the deal, the BBC reports.

The deal is expected to be completed during the weekend.

The reported transfer means Manchester United will miss out on Vermaelen after targeting him for much of the summer, as it appears manager Arsène Wenger preferred to sell the defender abroad rather than to a rival club in the Premier League.

Vermaelen struggled to find playing time at Arsenal, despite the fact he was the club's captain, with Wenger electing to use the pairing of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny as his preferred choices at center-back.

He only managed to appear in seven Premier League matches during the 2013-14 campaign, for a total of 14 games in all competitions with the London-based club he'd committed five seasons to since his arrival from Ajax for £10-million in 2009.
