Louis van Gaal: 'There is no Manchester United player who is fit'

Manchester United may have defeated Roma 3-2 in a preseason friendly on Saturday, but Louis van Gaal wasn't happy with what he saw on the pitch.

In addition to saying "all my good passers failed today" while singling out Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, and Shinji Kagawa, the Dutch manager criticized his squad's fitness level as they approach the beginning of the Premier League season.

"There is no Manchester United player who is fit," Van Gaal said. "Maybe the boys who trained before the World Cup players started on 7 July. Maybe they are more fit but also not fit. The World Cup players have only had four days' training."

Wilfried Zaha, in particular, appears to be a fitness concern for Van Gaal. The 21-year-old is the only player yet to feature in Man Utd's tour of the United States, and following the team's win over Roma, his character was tested when the manager asked him to do a double warm-down session. Van Gaal also told Darren Fletcher, David de Gea, and Anders Lindegaard to join Zaha.

Upon completing their workout, the four players were then surprised to discover that they were to undergo a gym session with one of the team's conditioning staff.

Van Gaal definitely seems to be a fan of tough love.
