Report: Kevin Seraphin, Snakey to stay in Washington after signing qualifying offer

One of the NBA's off-court MVPs is returning to the Washington Wizards for the 2014-15 season.

Kevin Seraphin and, presumably, his pet snake Snakey, will remain in D.C., as Serpahin has signed his $3.9 million qualifying offer, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

Qualifying offers aren't signed by players all that often, but in this case it may represent a win-win for both sides. A team offers a player a qualifying offer ahead of restricted free agency as a way to retain the right to match any offer sheet the player signs; a player will often decline it to sign a bigger deal elsewhere or the team will rescind the offer if cap space is required.

In this case, the Wizards get another year of a semi-productive reserve big man, and while the price is above market value, it's not egregious and is only a one-year deal. With the team having signed Drew Gooden and Kris Humphries in recent days, they could have justified pulling the offer, but it's not a major issue given the space they have beneath the luxury tax.

For Seraphin, he likely tested the market and didn't see a path to $3.9 million in guaranteed money elsewhere. While he's still just 24 and was the No. 17 pick in the 2010 draft, the contract Ed Davis signed (two years, $2 million) may have signaled that teams weren't willing to throw money at players of that ilk.

In four seasons with the Wizards, the 6-foot-9 Seraphin averaged 6.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 16.6 minutes while shooting 48.5 percent from the floor.
