Brazil's World Cup came to a merciful end with a 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in Saturday's third-place match in Brasilia, and today one of the most beleaguered members of the squad announced that he has played his last game wearing the famous yellow kit.

"For me, the Selecao is finished," striker Fred was quoted as telling Brazilian media (via Sky Sports).

The 30-year-old drew the ire of a nation for a string of awful performances over the past month, and hangs up his international boots after scoring 15 goals in 33 international caps.

Fred, who scored just one goal in the tournament (during the 4-1 win over Cameroon) was derided for his lack of movement and influence following the injury suffered by star man Neymar.

The striker will now turn his attention to club football with Brazilian side Fluminense.
