Oilers sign Ben Scrivens to two-year, $4.6 million contract extension
On Monday the Edmonton Oilers signed 27-year-old goaltender Ben Scrivens to a two year, $4.6 million dollar contract extension.
Scrivens, who backstopped Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins' Toronto Marlies to the Calder Cup final in 2012, was acquired by the Oilers in exchange for a third round pick in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings in mid-January.
Scrivens isn't a proven starter and only has 58 NHL appearances under his belt. His results in the NHL, however, have been promising and he was enormously successful in his three AHL seasons as well.

Scirvens' extension will make him the 26th most well compensated goaltender in the NHL next season in terms of annual cap-hit (and he'll probably end up even lower on that list once the likes of James Reimer, Ryan Miller and Jonas Hiller sign new contracts this summer).
Scrivens has shown enough promise that this contract extension seems an eminently reasonable gamble for the Oilers. But the question remains: can Scrivens take this opportunity in Edmonton and prove that he's a capable NHL starter?
