Avalanche sign Varlamov to five-year extension worth a reported $29.5 million

Scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, it cost the Colorado Avalanche nearly $6 million a season to lock up goaltender Semyon Varlamov for the next five seasons, according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

The 25-year-old, who will represent Russia at the Olympics in Sochi, will more-than double his current salary, and be a top-ten earner among NHL goaltenders next season.

In 42 games, Varlamov has netted 26 wins catalyzed by career-bests in both GAA (2.63), and Sv% (.925).
