Mahomes ready to learn from Smith, calls landing with Chiefs 'a dream'

The Kansas City Chiefs paid a significant price, but they've got their quarterback of the future.

The Chiefs moved up to 10th overall to select Patrick Mahomes, trading the 27th pick, a third-round draft pick, and next year's first-rounder to acquire the successor to Alex Smith.

Mahomes will likely spend his rookie season sitting behind Smith, refining his impressive but raw skill set.

"I knew there was a chance but for this to actually happen, you never expect it," Mahomes said on NFL Total Access after being drafted, according to Conor Orr of NFL.com. "You want to be drafted high but to be drafted high into an organization like the Kansas City Chiefs, it's like a dream to me."

Smith has two years left on his deal, so Mahomes may be waiting some time to take over the reins. Until then, the young pivot is excited to shadow the accomplished veteran Smith.

"Yeah it's going to be awesome getting to learn from a guy like Alex Smith, who's had a ton of success in the league. I'm just going to get in there, work as hard as I can, learn from him, learn from everyone in the organization and the team, and be ready to go when the opportunity presents itself."

Smith will likely be feeling some deja vu. While with the San Francisco 49ers, Smith lost his starting job to Colin Kaepernick despite his solid play, which led to his trade to the Chiefs.
