With his season at risk of ending prematurely through injury, Nuri Sahin can at least take comfort in knowing he'll remain at Borussia Dortmund for the foreseeable future after agreeing to a contract extension Tuesday.

The Bundesliga side announced Sahin has put pen to paper on a contract extension that will see the midfielder call Dortmund home until 2019.

"Everyone knows how comfortable I feel in Dortmund - both in the city and in this stadium with our extraordinary fans. BVB is the club that belongs to my heart," Sahin told the team's website.

Unfortunately, he won't be involved Wednesday when Dortmund takes on Bayern Munich in the DFB Pokal semi-final after suffering a knee injury Saturday, which could force him to miss the remainder of the 2017-18 campaign. Dortmund, however, continues to hold out hope that Sahin will play a part in the final weeks of the season.

Sahin joined the team's youth academy in 2001 before graduating to the senior squad and becoming the youngest player to feature and score in Germany's top flight.

The 28-year-old spent two brief spells away from Dortmund when he fulfilled his dream of playing for Real Madrid in 2011. With regular playing time hard to come by in the Spanish capital, Sahin was loaned to Premier League outfit Liverpool before returning to Germany in 2014.

"We're all delighted Nuri's staying with us," Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said. "He grew up in the region, he's a really good guy, and Borussia Dortmund is deeply ingrained in him."
