DeMarcus Ware signs 1-day contract to officially retire with Cowboys
DeMarcus Ware is going out as a Cowboy.
The nine-time Pro Bowler, who announced his intentions to retire earlier this offseason, signed a one-day contract in Dallas on Monday before making the move official.
Ware, a first-round pick in the 2005 draft, was one of the NFL's most productive pass-rushers while playing the first nine seasons of his career with the Cowboys.
Starting all but three games over that stretch, he racked up a franchise-record 117 sacks.
Dallas elected to part ways after the 2013 season, but Ware would go on to prove that he still had plenty left in the tank. He added another 21.5 sacks across three seasons with the Denver Broncos, playing an integral role in the team's Super Bowl 50 win.
The future Hall of Famer said during Monday's press conference that the Cowboys were one of several teams interested in signing him for the 2017 campaign before he decided that it was time to walk away, according to David Helman of the team's official website.
Ware retires with 138.5 sacks for his career, good for eighth among the NFL's all-time leaders.
