Ex-Redskin Garcon defends fired GM: 'All the players loved Scot'

While it may seem like par for the course for an organization as dysfunctional as the Washington Redskins, the details surrounding the firing of former general manager Scot McCloughan is getting murkier and murkier.

After McCloughan told friend and media member Michael Robinson that he felt hated by team president Bruce Allen, one of his former players says the locker room had a completely different set of feelings toward the former GM.

"I know all the players did love Scot," Pierre Garcon told "PFT Live" on Friday. "Scot was a great guy, a football guy, all the players loved Scot and definitely (are) going to miss him. Hopefully, he'll still be around football because he was a great guy. He was all about football.

"It didn't matter who you were, where you were from, he was just happy that you were playing football for him and he was happy that he scouted you and for him to bring you to D.C."

After just two years of service, McCloughan was unceremoniously fired on the first day of free agency and has yet to be replaced. Not long after his firing was announced, a report was leaked to the media that McCloughan was dismissed due to drinking in the locker room on multiple occasions.

Garcon, who has since signed with the San Francisco 49ers, denied that claim.

"No, I never really did," Garcon said when asked if he ever witnessed McCloughan's alleged overindulgence. "Scot, he's not a vocal guy. He's a quiet guy, he kind of stays to himself but when he starts talking to you you can tell the passion and love he has, but I don’t think I've ever seen him drunk.

"I've never seen him act any kind of way to make me even question that he was drunk."

McCloughan also denied the claim to Robinson, admitting that he's had a drinking problem in the past, but that it did not affect him while with the Redskins.
