Watch: Ronald Torreyes turns shallow blooper into extra bases

Brad Mills / USA TODAY Sports

Some days, you hit lazy fly balls to shallow left field, and some days you hit doubles. For Ronald Torreyes, Saturday's matinee against the St. Louis Cardinals was a day to ask "why not both?"

The New York Yankees shortstop celebrated Jackie Robinson Day with a leadoff hit in the sixth inning on a pretty odd play, hitting what seemed to be a can of corn and turning it into extra bases.

To top it all off, Torreyes appears to not even look at the play unfolding all the way up the first-base line, before realizing that he's happened upon a hit and turning on the jets to get to second base. On an extremely close play at the bag, Torreyes was ruled safe thanks to a pretty creative slide while turned on his back.

It ended up being a pretty pivotal play, as the Yankees ended up scoring two runs that inning, taking a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals would end up storming back to make it a close one, but New York held on for a 3-2 victory.
