Correa 'not shutting the door' on contract extension with Astros

It would appear Carlos Correa and his agent need to get on the same page.

After Correa's representative Greg Genske said his client would never sign an early contract extension, the 22-year-old star shortstop cleared the air on Friday.

"I'm not shutting the door," he said, according to Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle. "The price has got be right, you know what I mean? And it's got to be early. Once I get to arbitration there's no turning back."

Team's locking up their young players to contract extension's has been frequent, particularly this year, with a number of quality players with three years or less of service time including Rougned Odor, Stephen Piscotty, and Tim Anderson to name a few, signing long-term deals. Any extension finalized by a team and player who has three or fewer years of experience wipes out their respective arbitration years.

Judging by Correa's comments, he would appear content with riding out his current deal in which the Houston Astros have him under team control until 2022.

"I love the Astros. I love the team. I love the fans in Houston. I love everything. I've still got five more years here until I'm a free agent. So, I'm not worried about it," he said.

"I'm not thinking about it right now. If the Astros are going to approach me at some point, I'm more than glad to listen to what they have to offer. But this is (a) business, so we'll see what happens."

Whatever materializes from now until 2022 remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, Correa is going to get paid. Since his rookie season in 2014, the Puerto Rican has combined to hit .276/.354/.475 with 10.1 WAR and 129 wRC+.
