Hall of Fame running back and San Diego Chargers legend LaDainian Tomlinson is joining the Los Angeles Chargers in a new role.

Tomlinson was named special assistant to the owner in a team announcement Thursday. In the role, Tomlinson will help with fan engagement and community relations.

"L.T. is one of the most beloved and iconic Chargers of all time," team chairman Dean Spanos said. "His active involvement in our fight for Los Angeles is vital, and he represents the very best of what it means to be a Charger on the field and in the community."

Tomlinson will continue to serve as an analyst on the NFL Network, which is based in Los Angeles.
