Report: Austin Peay in talks to hire South Carolina's Matt Figger

Spruce Derden / USA TODAY Sports

Fresh off its first trip to a Final Four, South Carolina's received a lot of praise for its run, especially head coach Frank Martin.

That spotlight has also shined on Martin's assistants, as Matt Figger is in advanced talks to become Austin Peay's new head coach, a source told Gary Parrish of CBS Sports.

Figger has been with the Gamecocks for five years, and he's been associate head coach in the latter four. Figger replaced Brad Underwood in 2013. Underwood left for Stephen F. Austin before being hired by Oklahoma State in 2016 and then Illinois this year.

Prior to South Carolina, Figger was part of Martin's staff at Kansas State from 2007-12.

In 10 years with Martin, Figger has been to five NCAA tournaments, reaching one Final Four and two Elite Eights.
