Wright-Phillips pens new Red Bulls Designated Player deal

Two-time MLS Golden Boot winner Bradley Wright-Phillips has put pen to paper on a new multi-year contract with the New York Red Bulls, the club announced Wednesday.

The London-born goal-poacher will now occupy a Designated Player spot on the club's roster. As per league policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wright-Phillips, 32, joins Sacha Kljestan and Gonzalo Veron as the club's Designated Players. The Manchester City academy product is already the franchise leader in nearly every goal-scoring record. His 70 league goals and 78 across all competitions are Red Bulls bests, and he's also in the club record books for career hat-tricks (4), multi-goal matches (16), and match-winning goals (20).

After enlisting with New York as a trialist in 2013, Wright-Phillips led the league in scoring during his debut season with a record 27 goals. He is only the fourth player in league history with four consecutive seasons of 15 or more goals, banging in 24 last season for a second Golden Boot honor. He netted his 70th MLS tally a fortnight ago in his 110th appearance, becoming the third-fastest player to 70 goals behind Roy Lassiter (104 matches) and Robbie Keane (106).

"His on-field accomplishments at this club speak for themselves, but that success comes from his dedication and work ethic day in and day out. His character and leadership make him an important part of our group and we look forward to his continued success with the Red Bulls," sporting director Denis Hamlett said.

"I’d like to thank Denis, Jesse (Marsch), and everyone at the club for the opportunity to continue wearing this shirt and playing in front of the best fans in MLS,” Wright-Phillips said. "I am very proud of what has been accomplished in my time here, but my sole focus is on trying to win MLS Cup."
