Atlanta's Martinez out 4-6 weeks with left quad injury

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta United announced Tuesday that star striker Josef Martinez will be out for four-to-six weeks with a left quad injury, suffered during international duty with Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier against Peru last Thursday.

Martinez, currently the top scorer in MLS with five goals, recently joined the club on a permanent basis out of Torino, when Atlanta activated a purchase option on his loan deal.

The Venezuelan striker picked up the injury in an eventual 2-2 draw against Peru before being replaced by Yangel Herrera in the 59th minute of play. It sees him ruled out for a number of significant fixtures, including a tilt against Toronto FC on April 8 and the Montreal Impact on April 15.

Still, Martinez - voted MLS Player of the Week after a 6-1 rout of Minnesota United - will be a tough loss for Gerardo Martino's side, with Kenwyne Jones the most likely replacement up top.
