This week's winners and losers from the world of golf

Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

Winners:

Dustin Johnson

Johnson's week:

  • Won his third straight event.
  • Completed the career WGC sweep.
  • Never trailed in his seven matches.
  • His South Carolina Gamecocks advanced to their first Final Four by beating SEC rival Florida on Sunday.

Ross Fisher

Fisher was ranked 53rd coming into the WGC-Match Play and needed a good week to crack the top 50 and grab an invitation to the Masters. The Englishman made it into the quarterfinals before falling to Hideto Tanihara, and will make the trip down Magnolia Lane in two weeks.

"To finally know that I am secured for the Masters is obviously very, very satisfying, " Fisher told Sky Sports.

Hideto Tanihara

What a week for the 60th-ranked player in the world. Tanihara showed his stuff the entire week. He beat Jordan Spieth in group play, took Johnson all the way to the 18th in the semifinals, and made a hole-in-one against Bill Haas. Tanihara also qualified for the Masters and will make his second appearance at Augusta National.

TaylorMade

The company got a free four-hour commercial with Jon Rahm and Johnson in the WGC-Match Play finals. The two provided a long-drive contest for the entire round.

Losers:

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy was eliminated from the WGC-Match Play before playing his final match, despite a 1-1-0 record. Gary Woodland's withdrawal on Thursday meant Soren Kjeldsen clinched the group when he beat Emiliano Grillo.

"It is odd whenever you have nothing to play for. I guess that's both our faults. We didn't win our matches on the first day. If it had been the old format, I would have already been home,"McIlroy told Jim Vertuno of the Associated Press.

D.A. Points

Points won his first PGA Tour event since 2013 Sunday at the Puerto Rico Open, but because the event is played opposite the WGC-Match Play, it doesn't get him an invitation to the Masters. Points does receive a two-year exemption on tour, though.

Sergio Garcia

It was raining, but Garcia provided the worst shot of the year in his Friday match against Jon Rahm, topping it into the water.
