Report: Georgetown to consider Patrick Ewing for head coach

It looks like Georgetown may take another step back into its past, as the school plans to consider Hoyas legend Patrick Ewing for its vacant head coaching position, sources told Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

Ewing, who helped Georgetown win the program's only national championship in 1984 under Hall of Fame coach John Thompson Jr., has been an NBA assistant for the last 15 seasons.

Georgetown fired John Thompson III - the son of Thompson Jr. - on Thursday, leading many to wonder whether the program would look to separate itself from the famous name, or dip back into its gloried past.

Ewing was reportedly a finalist for the Sacramento Kings' head coaching job last year, and has long wanted to be an NBA head coach.

As well, his son, Patrick Ewing Jr., was an assistant under Thompson III.

Since 1972, either a Thompson or a Thompson assistant has coached the Hoyas. Should Ewing be hired, it would continue the tie to the program, whose new athletic center is named after Thompson Jr.
