Morris, Dempsey on the mark as Sounders sweep Red Bulls aside

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

The Seattle Sounders defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 on Sunday to wrap up Week 3 of MLS action, with U.S. national team duo Clint Dempsey and Jordan Morris finding the back of the net in time for the international break.

Dempsey converted an early penalty before Bradley Wright-Phillips equalized with a headed effort. Not to be outdone, the Sounders took a 2-1 lead in emphatic fashion when Morris scored a header to complete a nine-pass sequence highlighted by Joevin Jones' incredible nutmeg.

Nicolas Lodeiro found an overlapping Jones out wide on the left, and Jones then pulled off a trick turn that burned Red Bulls defender Sal Zizzo between the legs. He then slipped the pass back to Lodeiro, who swung a cross over for Morris to head home.

Harry Shipp added a third to wrap up the result as the Sounders enjoyed all three points in their 2017 home opener.
