Toronto FC back to winning ways as Whitecaps falter again

Anne-Marie Sorvin-USA TODAY Sports

It took a few games for Toronto FC to find its groove, and Vancouver Whitecaps newcomer Brek Shea helped his opponents do it with his red-card ejection, which led his team to a 2-0 loss at BC Place on Saturday.

The two teams locked horns for well over an hour with little by way of chances before Shea's ejection opened up the match for Toronto's attacking core. The former Orlando City man seemed to mouth off to referee Ismail Elfath, which prompted a second yellow shortly after he garnered the first for a foul.

Spearheaded by Jozy Altidore, Toronto scored back-to-back goals to secure its first win of the 2017 season. Substitutes Raheem Edwards and Victor Vazquez combined, with Altidore the middleman on the play, to give the latter his first goal in MLS midway through the second half.

Altidore then scored a goal of his own in ferocious fashion to wrap up the Reds' victory. Toronto next hosts Sporting Kansas City on March 31, while the Whitecaps entertain the LA Galaxy on April Fools' Day.
