Cardinals' Schafer expected to miss 7 months after elbow surgery

Jordan Schafer's attempt at becoming a two-way player for the St. Louis Cardinals is going to have to wait awhile.

The left-handed pitcher/outfielder underwent elbow ligament repair surgery on Friday and is expected to miss seven months, according to MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch.

An MRI earlier this week on the 30-year-old revealed damage to his elbow, but it appears he didn't need to undergo Tommy John surgery.

Schafer spent the entirety of his big-league career as an outfielder, appearing in 463 games since 2009, but converted to pitcher in the minors with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization last season.

He pitched in 40 games - two starts - in 2016, posting a 3.83 ERA with 59 strikeouts in 49 1/3 innings.

Schafer also owns a .228/.308/.307 slash line with 12 home runs, 85 RBIs, and 103 stolen bases at the major-league level.
