Vanderbilt's Fisher-Davis owns 'dumb mistake' in heartbreaking loss

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

Vanderbilt's furious comeback ended in heartbreak on Thursday as a Matthew Fisher-Davis foul in the dying seconds gifted Northwestern the game-winning free throws.

The junior standout fouled Bryant McIntosh on his own side of half with 14 seconds to play to send the Wildcats guard to the line trailing 66-65.

After the game, Fisher-Davis took full blame for the move, claiming he thought Vanderbilt was trailing and had to foul to extend the game.

"It was a collective effort in coming back, and it was my dumb mistake why we lost," Fisher-Davis told Adam Sparks of The Tennessean after the game.

"I just didn't know the score to be honest," Fisher-Davis added, according to ESPN's Michele Steele. "I saw coach (Bryce) Drew point at my man for my matchup and I got confused and fouled. That's it."

Outside of the shocking foul, Fisher-Davis was the star of the night for the Commodores dropping 22 points off the bench, but unfortunately it will be the play in the last seconds that everyone remembers.

Vanderbilt finishes Bryce Drew's first season with the program with a 19-16 record, while Northwestern notched its first win in NCAA tournament history and will face Gonzaga in the second round.
