South Carolina quarterback Brandon McIlwain is transferring after just one season in the program, he announced Wednesday.

"I will cherish the time I spent at USC and I thank all the people in Columbia and the Gamecock Nation who have shown me love and support, but at this point it is time to make a change," he wrote in a statement.

McIlwain was recruited to South Carolina as one of the top dual-threat pivots in the nation one year ago. He threw for 600 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in limited action for the offensively challenged Gamecocks. The 6-footer also played baseball at South Carolina.

The Gamecocks appear likely to move ahead with Jake Bentley as their starting quarterback. Bentley, also a freshman last season, posted 1,420 yards with nine touchdowns and four picks.
