The Kansas City Chiefs are pushing for a new contract with safety Eric Berry ahead of Wednesday's franchise tag deadline, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing sources.

Kansas City aims to make Berry the highest-paid safety in the NFL, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Berry said he didn't anticipate an extension before Wednesday.

The 28-year-old recorded 77 tackles, nine pass deflections, four interceptions and a forced fumble, playing all 16 games for the Chiefs in 2016. Berry was named to the fifth Pro Bowl of his career and earned first-team All-Pro honors for the third time.

Kansas City is finalizing a five-year, $41.2-million extension with guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif and it's possible that the organization is aiming to complete that deal first, before moving onto Berry.
