Leicester mathematically out of title race

Chelsea's 3-1 victory over Swansea City has made it a mathematical impossibility for Leicester City to defend its 2015-16 Premier League title.

The east Midlands side, rudderless following Claudio Ranieri's sacking on Thursday, also sunk into the bottom three due to Crystal Palace's narrow 1-0 win against fellow struggler Middlesbrough.

There are only 39 available points left for Leicester, which would put the fallen champion on 60 points if it won all of its remaining matches. Chelsea sits pretty atop the division on 63 points.

It would even take a Herculean effort for the clubs positioned between second and sixth. Second-placed Manchester City is 11 points short of Chelsea with a game in hand.

As for Leicester, caretaker manager Craig Shakespeare has been dropped right into the thick of a relegation dogfight:

# Team Played Goal difference Points
14 Bournemouth 26 -15 26
15 Swansea City 26 -25 24
16 Middlesbrough 26 -9 22
17 Crystal Palace 26 -13 22
18 Leicester City 25 -19 21
19 Hull City 26 -27 21
20 Sunderland 26 -24 19
