Newly-crowned Cubs commanding massive ticket prices in 2017

For the first time in 108 years, the Chicago Cubs will enter a new Major League Baseball season as reigning World Series champions.

With the franchise’s long-suffering title drought now quenched, it’s no surprise that Cubs tickets are among the most expensive in the league in 2017. A potential run at a dynasty has made the Cubs one of MLB’s most sought-after teams to watch, and fans will be paying up to see the reigning champs in action at Wrigley Field this season.

On search engine TicketIQ, the average resale price for 2017 Cubs tickets at Wrigley Field is $198. That marks a 32 percent increase over last season’s $150 average. The Cubs own the priciest season average in the league in 2017, leading the second-place Red Sox ($156 season average) by a considerable margin.

Take a look at the Cubs’ three most expensive games of the season below, according to data provided by TicketIQ:

4/10/17 | Cubs vs. Dodgers (Opening Day) | Avg. ticket price: $700 | Get-in: $179

Unsurprisingly, Opening Day will be the Cubs' most expensive game of the year, as it's their first game at Wrigley Field since winning the World Series. Not only that, but it comes against a heated National League foe, the Los Angeles Dodgers, whom the Cubs narrowly eliminated to advance to the 2016 Fall Classic. Given the competitive NLCS series these two clubs went through last October, don't be surprised if the Dodgers are lining up ace Clayton Kershaw for the North Side battle.

8/14/17 | Cubs vs. Reds (Fergie Jenkins Retired #31 Flag) | Avg. ticket price: $523 | Get-in: $48

It might seem unusual that a mid-August game, especially one that involves the cellar-dwelling Reds, clocks in as the team's second-most expensive game of the season. But there's good reason for it: the first 10,000 fans will receive a flag featuring former Cubs pitcher and Hall-of-Famer Fergie Jenkins' Retired No. 31. This is sure to be one of the most unique promotional giveaways of the season, though fans can probably wait closer to August before securing tickets, as the average price should drop by then.

4/2/17 | Cubs @ Cardinals | Avg. ticket price: $371 | Get-in: $123

The most expensive road game for the Cubs in 2017 takes place in enemy territory - and in their very first game as the defending champs, no less - when Chicago goes up against the Cardinals on Opening Day. Emotions are sure to be running high, especially for St. Louis, who had won three straight NL Central titles prior to last season. Due to the Cubs' meteoric rise, the Cardinals missed the playoffs for the first time since 2010. This contest could dictate how the early portion of the season goes for both clubs.
