Ex-NFL running back Cedric Benson arrested for DWI

Brian Spurlock / US PRESSWIRE

Former NFL running back Cedric Benson was arrested for driving while intoxicated Saturday morning, an arrest affidavit obtained by the Austin American-Statesman's Rachel Rice revealed.

Benson was found driving 42 mph in a 30-mph zone, then made an incorrect turn, according to a police officer. Later, police say Benson changed lanes without signaling, and they pulled him over in a 7-Eleven parking lot at nearly 3:00 a.m. ET.

Upon being pulled over, Benson was asked to stay in his car but left his vehicle, intending to enter the 7-Eleven, according to the affidavit.

The affidavit states that Benson refused to perform a field sobriety test and a balance test and, when asked to recite the alphabet, said he was unable to do so because he played in the NFL for eight years.

Bond was set at $5,000 and he was released from police custody.

Benson was selected fourth overall in the 2005 draft by the Chicago Bears out of Texas after an excellent collegiate career. He last played in the NFL during the 2012 season for the Green Bay Packers.
