Georgia's Maten out indefinitely with knee sprain

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

There's good news and bad news when it comes to the knee injury suffered by Georgia's Yante Maten during Saturday's loss to Kentucky.

The bad news is the star forward will be out indefinitely with a knee sprain and there is no timetable for when he may be able to return to the team.

The good news is that it doesn't look like Maten will require surgery, which is promising after Bulldogs head coach Mark Fox described the injury as serious following the game.

"I am very disappointed for Yante," Fox said Sunday, according to the school's website. "He loves to play, and it's tough when that is taken away by injury. Fortunately, it appears that surgery is not needed, and he should make a full recovery in time."

Maten is the Bulldogs' leading scorer and third in the SEC in points per game. He's averaging 18.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.5 blocks this season while shooting 52.6 percent from the field and 47.5 percent from beyond the arc.

Following the loss to the Wildcats, Georgia sits at 15-12 on the season and will be in tough to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament with Maten sidelined.
