Remembering the NFL's most painful breakups

Valentine's Day isn't all love, candy, and the successful execution of Netflix and chill.

The day after Feb. 14 can be a difficult one for the lovestruck and loveless. Many of those who shot their shot chucked up air balls; flower deliveries went unreceived; and a fair share of relationships ended the previous evening.

For those looking for companionship, here is theScore's list of comparable breakups throughout NFL history.

Joe Montana reached living legend status during his years in San Francisco. Yet no measure of success would stop coach Bill Walsh from pushing for more.

Walsh admittedly pitted Montana and his backup Steve Young against each other and eventually forced Montana out of town.

Young took over the controls of the 49ers and Montana escaped to Kansas City. He would lead the Chiefs to the AFC championship in 1992, but could never attain the late-career trip to the Super Bowl that eluded him.

Allen 💔 Raiders

Marcus Allen did it all for the Raiders. The superstar at USC won Rookie of the Year, NFL MVP, and Super Bowl MVP during his 11 years with the Los Angeles Raiders. But during his final years with the franchise, owner Al Davis forced him into a supporting role, one that included blocking duties.

Allen finished his career with the hated Chiefs. Earning a measure of revenge, the Chiefs went 9-1 against the Raiders with Allen in red and yellow.

The owner of the Browns broke the hearts of Clevelanders when, after 35 years together, he packed up all his things and skipped town in the middle of the night.

Cleveland was left without a team as the Browns were recast as the Ravens. To make matters worse, Modell got the ring he so desired five years later in Baltimore.

Cleveland's heart was at least partially mended when the Browns were revived in 1999.

Favre 💔 Packers

The Packers broke up with their aging love and steered him in another direction, hoping he'd never end up with her.

But after giving each other space for a year, Brett Favre re-emerged with the hated enemy in Minnesota. Things turned ugly. Things were said. Favre took the new girl to sacred places (the NFC Championship Game), but got cold feet just steps from the altar.

Then the gunslinger swore off dating. He retired. Spent some time out of the public eye.

Green Bay reconciled with one of its great loves and the relationship has mended from broken to civil, even friendly.

They'll always have the memories.

Manning 💔 Colts

Ah, the perfect example of when one person in the relationship desperately wants to keep things going, vowing it'll get better, while the other has already checked out. In this instance, the Colts already had their eyes on the next Mr. Right.

Peyton Manning's neck surgeries put doubt into the minds of Colts brass and had them preparing for life afterward. While Manning spent the 2011 season on the sidelines, the Colts did their homework on the new kid on the block: Andrew Luck.

Rather than cheat on Manning, Jim Irsay and the Colts did the "honest" thing by ending things publicly before striking up their affair with Luck.

For Manning, however - and for those in the legendary quarterback's corner - it was sheer heartbreak. At least he got back at his ex by getting a ring four years later. The Colts, for their part, have been miserable ever since.
