Venezuela's Galvis pulls out of WBC with groin injury

When the World Baseball Classic gets underway in March, Team Venezuela will be without Freddy Galvis.

The Philadelphia Phillies shortstop has decided against playing in the event because of a groin injury, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki.

Galvis is listed as day to day, but the injury is significant for a Venezuela squad that now enters the classic with Alcides Escobar as its lone shortstop. The news also comes on the heels of drama between New York Mets infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and Venezuela general manager Carlos Guillen.

Last week, Cabrera blasted Guillen on social media for keeping him off the roster after manager Omar Vizquel initially said he would be part of the team.

"Negative, I will not participate at the World Baseball Classic because manager Carlos Guillen is the most fake and least serious person that could exist as manager and it's a shame that Omar Vizquel, with all the respect he deserves, is accepting all this embarrassment," Cabrera wrote on Instagram in Spanish, as translated by theScore.

Cabrera had allegedly bought tickets for family and friends to attend the classic before being told he wasn't on the team.

It wasn't the first roster situation surrounding Guillen and the Venezulean club, either.

In December, members of the team - including Felix Hernandez and Miguel Cabrera - threatened to boycott the event after Vizquel was relieved of his duties as manager. Vizquel was later given back his position.
