Celta Vigo's Berizzo wants review of Balaidos to ensure supporters' safety

Eduardo Berizzo, Celta Vigo's manager, believes there's still work to be done at Balaidos, the Galician club's municipality-owned stadium.

Celta's La Liga fixture versus Real Madrid was postponed after a report from Vigo's city hall deemed Balaidos was unsafe for spectators and players. The stadium was hit by one of the storms that descended upon northwestern Spain, resulting in 20 square metres of the venue becoming completely detached and the shifting of its substructure.

On Tuesday, Berizzo claimed "Balaidos needs a review regardless of whether it happened or not," because supporters deserve "a stadium that is completely safe and comfortable."

Real Madrid reportedly proposed the match, which was initially scheduled for Sunday, be moved to another venue or played in a partially closed Balaidos. According to the Guardian's Sid Lowe, Los Blancos wanted to play because a postponed game would create further fixture congestion. But Berizzo insisted the clash "would have been suspended against any rival because the integrity of spectators was at risk."

"What happened at Balaidos makes me think, in the match three days earlier against (Deportivo) Alaves, something could have happened that we wouldn't have wanted," Berizzo said, according to AS. The Argentinian manager also joked about still being unable to make it rain and added: "facing another rival is better than facing Real Madrid."

The encounter between Celta and Real Madrid wasn't the only La Liga fixture to be postponed over the weekend. Friday's match involving Deportivo de La Coruna and Alaves was also put off because of the storms.
