Lallana named England Player of the Year

England's 2016 will be remembered for Roy Hodgson's odd tactical tinkering, a European Championship elimination at the hands of Iceland, and Sam Allardyce's controversial 67-day tenure at the national team's helm.

But, for Adam Lallana, it will be remembered as the year he was his country's best player.

The Liverpool midfielder took 39 percent of votes from members of the England Supporters Club to win the Three Lions' Player of the Year award, beating out competition from Leicester City's Jamie Vardy (12 percent) and captain Wayne Rooney (8 percent).

"This award is a huge honour," the 28-year-old told TheFA.com. "The last three winners were Rooney (2015), Rooney (2014), and Steven Gerrard (2012) so that just goes to show what a great achievement this is.

"Things have been going well this season for my club so that always helps. When you're playing well for your club then hopefully you can transmit your form into the national team and help out."

The former Southampton man bagged his first England goal in September's late defeat of Slovakia in September, and then scored a goal in each of November's matches against Scotland and Spain, respectively.

The Three Lions continue their quest for 2018 World Cup qualification with a visit from Lithuania on March 26. With three wins and one draw, England currently sits atop of Group F with a two-point advantage over Slovenia.

"Off the back of a disappointing year for England as a whole, I'll be looking to definitely improve in 2017 and hopefully we can build on how it has started under Gareth Southgate, as there have been plenty of positives," Lallana added.
