Report: Rays interested in Chris Carter

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays are making the rounds of several sluggers, this time in the form of the reigning National League home run king.

The club has been on the lookout for added offense in recent days, looking at a handful of offensive producers including Mike Napoli, Billy Butler, and are expressing interest in free-agent power hitter Chris Carter, sources said, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

Carter is a prototypical slugger in the sense that his home run totals are impressive, but his plate discipline (career .314 OBP and over 750 strikeouts since 2013) leaves much to be desired. Still, the Rays have done an admirable job adding to its roster this offseason after signing Colby Rasmus and Wilson Ramos to deals in free agency.

The slugging first baseman is coming off a season in which he hit a National League leading 41 home runs in a career-high 160 games with the Milwaukee Brewers. Other teams to show interest in Carter are the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.
