Woods struggles on final 9 to shoot 4-over 76

Through 11 holes, it looked pretty good; then the wheels came off for Tiger Woods, who finished his first round at 4-over 76 at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Woods bogeyed his opening hole of the round, then made eight straight pars to shoot a 1-over-par 37 on his first nine holes at Torrey Pines.

The 41-year-old made back-to-back birdies to open his second nine, his first birdies in 521 days, but then began a rough six-hole stretch.

Tiger bogeyed three straight then added a double-bogey at the par-4 15th when his ball went left into a hazard.

He would add another bogey at No. 17, but managed to birdie the par-5 18th after missing another fairway, his 10th missed fairway of the round.

"I'm trying to get a feel for playing, so much is different," the 79-time PGA Tour winner said.

He added: "I was fighting out there all day. I didn't hit all that good. The greens were a little tough out there with some of the putts, and I had a round which I let slip away in the middle part of the back nine."

Woods and playing partners Jason Day and Dustin Johnson played their round in over five hours and it was something the 14-time major champion wasn't used to.

"We were playing so much slower than I am used to," he said. "We played really quick at Hero (Challenge), here was just a little bit slower. Honestly it was just weird waiting that much."

Woods, Day, and Johnson tee off the North course Friday at 12:30 p.m. ET.
