What we learned after Round 1 at Torrey Pines

The opening round of the Farmers Insurance Open is in the books, here are three things we learned from Torrey Pines.

Tiger should've started somewhere else

Woods returned to a familiar place, a site he's dominated over the years, but the South course crushed Tiger on Thursday with its thick, wet conditions. Woods was able to mitigate the damage on the front with some lovely up-and-downs, but on the back it was a different story. A tournament like the Sony Open or the CareerBuilder would've been a nice way to ease back into competitive play.

Crazy Canucks

There are five Canadians in the field at the Farmers Insurance Open, and three cracked the top 10 Thursday. Adam Hadwin is coming off a round of 59 and a second-place finish last week and sits in solo second place behind Justin Rose. Brad Fritsch is tied for third, while Graham DeLaet is three back of Rose in a tie for eighth. The two youngest Canucks, Nick Taylor and Mackenzie Hughes, also posted under-par rounds, and have each won on the PGA Tour.

Go North to go low

The Farmer Insurance is held on both the North and South course for the first two rounds, and it's no secret which is the easier of the two. Of the top 18 players on the leaderboard, 14 of them played on the much easier North course and were a combined 63-under par.
