Poinsettia Bowl shuts down after 12 seasons
The Poinsettia Bowl is no more.
The San Diego Bowl Game Association - which organized the annual contest - announced Wednesday its board of directors has voted to focus solely on the Holiday Bowl and abolish the Poinsettia Bowl after 12 seasons.
"College football and the bowl game structure has gone through major changes through the years and our board feels the time is right to focus our efforts on one postseason game," Mark Neville, executive director of the San Diego Bowl Game Association, said in a news release.
The Poinsettia Bowl annually pitted a team from the Mountain West Conference against either BYU or a team from the MAC. BYU defeated Wyoming in the 2016 installment of the game.

The organization also said it's in discussions with the San Diego Padres to bring the Holiday Bowl to Petco Park if Qualcomm Stadium closes after the 2018 campaign.
Qualcomm Stadium used to host the San Deigo Chargers, but the NFL franchise recently bolted to Los Angeles and is set to begin playing there in 2017.
