The Toronto Blue Jays have inked a backup for Russell Martin.

Free-agent catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has agreed to a minor-league deal with the Blue Jays, pending a physical, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

If the veteran cracks the big-league squad, he'll make $1.25-million, plus $250,000 in incentives.

Aside from Martin, prospect A.J. Jimenez and Juan Graterol, who was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, are the only three catchers on Toronto's 40-man roster.

In 92 games last year, his only season with the Detroit Tigers, Saltalamacchia struggled to the tune of a career-worst .171/.284/.346 slash line with 12 homers.

Over 11 big-league seasons between six different teams, the 31-year-old is slashing .234/.309/.413 with 110 home runs.
