On-loan FC Schalke defender Baba Rahman has been ruled out for the rest of the 2016-17 season after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL he sustained with Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations.

Rahman, on loan to the Bundesliga out of English club Chelsea, is not expected to return to London, with the Blues planning on working with Schalke on arrangements for his rehabilitation, Paul Gilmour from Sky Sports reports.

The 22-year-old left full-back suffered the injury to his left knee during Ghana's Group D opener against Uganda on Jan. 17. He also reportedly ruptured his meniscus at the same time, being forced off in the 39th minute in an eventual 1-0 win for the Black Stars.

In his absence, Ghana manager Avram Grant - once of Chelsea - has turned to Frank Acheampong to shore up the left-hand side of his back line. It's a move that served Ghana well in a 1-0 win over Mali four days after Rahman's injury.

Still, Rahman's early exit left something of a down note for Ghana in the early goings of the continental competition.

Rahman made just 23 appearances with Chelsea before new manager Antonio Conte set up the loan arrangement; he cost Chelsea £21.7 million when he first made his Premier League switch out of FC Augsburg in August 2015.
